Former Attorney General Van de Kamp to release death penalty report Monday

Category: LocalTags: John Van de Kamp, death penalty, commission, administration of justice Former state attorney general John Van de KampFormer California Attorney General and gubernatorial candidate John Van de Kamp is scheduled to release a 100-page report on the state's administration of the death penalty on Monday.

Van de Kamp, who ran for governor in 1990 only to lose to Dianne Feinstein in the primary, chairs the California Commission on the Fair Administration of Justice and has spent the last year or so holding hearings around the state on the controversial death penalty issue.

Created by the California state Senate, the commission's charge was to examine the causes of wrongful convictions and make recommendations to further ensure that the administration of criminal justice in California is fair and accurate.

The commission's report is the 1st comprehensive review of the operation of California's death penalty law since its initial enactment in 1978. The Commission conducted 3 public hearings and heard the testimony of 72 witnesses in preparing the report.

Van de Kamp and commission Executive Director Gerald F. Uelmen will participate in a press conference to discuss the contents of the report at 1 p.m. Monday in Room 1190 at the State Capitol in Sacramento.
