NSE Advocates Death Penalty For Contractors Of Collapsed Building.

The Nigerian Society of Engineers yesterday advocated death sentence for contractors that handled collapsed buildings in the country.

President of the Association, Engr Kashim Abdul Ali, made the call on the occasion of a press briefing as part of activities to mark the NSE 50th Anniversary in Enugu State.

He dismissed rumours making the rounds that qualified engineers constructed majority of the buildings that collapsed in the past.

According to him, most of the buildings were constructed by, "Quacks who parade themselves as engineers".

"I want to make it clear here that no collapsed building has been attributed to any qualified engineer in the past. The problem is that most of the buildings were constructed by quacks".

"We are advocating death sentence for those behind collapsed buildings. We are calling on government to look into circumstances that made buildings to collapse in the past. They should also sentence those behind the collapsed structure to death," he said.

On the proposed 2nd Niger Bridge, the NSE boss blamed government for delay in the construction of the bridge, disclosing that NSE had already concluded the design of the project.

Commenting on the non involvement of indigenous engineers in the planning and execution of developmental projects, he insisted that Nigeria has so far not given engineering its rightful place in the scheme of affairs, attributing the the inability of Nigeria to actualise a sustainable development to the ugly development.
